116 Trophy 2022

116 Sprint

Running alongside the hugely popular 116 Trophy endurance series for the first time in 2023 ahead of a championship planned for 2024, this standalone new formula uses the exact same specification E87 BMW 116 race cars as the enduro, in order to offer drivers the choice of a season of 15 minute sprint races instead of - or in addition to - the 90 minute outings. Donor cars are plentiful and great value, whilst the control parts are some of the best value in UK club motorsport.

Engine

1.6i N45 '116i' models produced from 2004-2006. There is a throttle body upgrade, replacement sports exhaust/catalyst (£450 inc. VAT and delivery) and ECU re-flash (£250 inc. VAT & delivery), but the engine remains largely standard.

Suspension

116 Sprint uses a control coilover damper kit from GAZ Shocks, adjustable at the rear only for equality, simplicity, budget and to reduce complication for newcomers. The kit includes adjustable billet front top mounts and is priced at just £778 inc. VAT and delivery to registered drivers.

Brakes

Brakes remain standard, but pad choice is free. Discount deals are available to registered drivers.

Transmission

Only five-speed manual variants are permitted, and the dual mass flywheel may be replaced by one of two single mass options if desired.

Wheels & Tyres

All cars will run on Nankang NS-2R control tyres, priced at just £87.50 each inc. VAT and delivery. Wheels are any 16" OEM BMW subject to regulations, or Revolution CR10.

Chassis

There is a mandatory 'control' roll cage for the 116, priced at £1392 inc. VAT.

Rounds

There are eight races (four double-headers) in the 2023 calendar, which is planned to increase to approximately 14 races in future seasons. The sprint races below are on the Saturday before a 116 Trophy endurance race on the Sunday of each respective weekend:

Rounds 1 & 2 - Silverstone National - 29th April
Rounds 3 & 4 - Brands Hatch Indy - 20th May
Rounds 5 & 6 - Snetterton 300 - 29th July
Rounds 7 & 8 - Silverstone International - 19th August

Entry Costs

750 Motor Club membership is just £30 for 12 months, season registration is £135 per driver (which includes registration for the 116 Trophy endurance races), and 2023 race entry fees will average at around £375 per double-header (1 x 15min qualifying, 2 x 15min races) at different venues. Roadgoing donor cars are available secondhand from just £1000.

Complete 'Arrive & Drive' packages are available from very competitive rates for those who would rather not own and run their own car - see the Arrive & Drive tab in the sub-menu.
